Most have a pile of Kurk wool, the fine wool from the shoulder and neck of the sheep; the rest are made of new wool. Some of the rugs, such as Nain and Tabriz, have silk knotted into them, which highlights ornaments and outlines. The knot density usually lies between around 200,000 and 640,000 knots per square metre.
