Akhche rugs from Afghanistan are among the most characterful weavings of Central Asia and have been a prized part of our Oriental rug collection at Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg since 1977. The robust nomadic rugs from the region around Akhche are distinguished by their earthy colour tones and geometric patterns. With more than 45 years of experience, we offer you a carefully curated collection of these authentic Afghan rugs.
Akhche, also known as Akche, is a town in the northern Afghan province of Jowzjan, near the Uzbek border. The region lies strategically on the historic trade routes of the Silk Road and was a melting pot of different cultures for centuries. This geographical location had a lasting influence on rug knotting, as Turkmen, Uzbek and Afghan traditions blended here.
Rug production in Akhche goes back to nomadic traditions passed from generation to generation. Originally, families knotted these rugs for their own use in their yurts and as trade goods for sale at the bazaars. The political upheavals of the 20th century led many weavers to leave their homeland and develop their skills in other regions.
Akhche rugs are known for their geometric designs and the use of traditional tribal motifs. Typical features include octagonal medallions arranged in rows, as well as borders with stylised floral and animal motifs. The patterns mostly follow the Turkmen rug-knotting tradition but show local distinctions that set them apart from other Central Asian weavings.
The colour palette of Akhche rugs moves mainly in warm earth tones. Rust red, dark blue, brown and beige dominate, complemented by accents in white or light blue. These natural colour tones come from plant-based dyes such as madder, indigo and various tree barks. The restrained colour scheme makes these rugs versatile furnishings that fit harmoniously into both modern and traditional interior concepts.
Most Akhche rugs are made exclusively from virgin wool, both for the warp and weft and for the pile. The wool used comes from local sheep breeds adapted to the harsh climate of Central Asia and yields particularly hard-wearing fibres. This natural wool quality gives the rugs their characteristic robustness and longevity.
Akhche rugs are knotted with the asymmetric Senneh knot, with knot density usually between 80,000 and 160,000 knots per square metre. This medium to good knot density enables precise pattern rendition while maintaining a robust structure. Similar knotting traditions are also found in Khal Mohammadi rugs and Ariana rugs, which also come from Afghanistan.
Akhche rugs are excellent for living spaces with medium to high traffic. Their robust structure makes them ideal for living rooms, dining rooms or entrance areas. The earthy tones harmonise particularly well with furniture made of natural wood, but they also form an interesting contrast with modern interior styles. Unlike the often more geometric Kelim Afghan rugs or the finer Kelim Maimene rugs, Akhche rugs offer more comfort and warmth thanks to their pile.
Care of Akhche rugs is straightforward. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile is usually enough for daily cleaning. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. The natural materials and dyes are resistant to ageing, so these wool rugs can last for decades with proper care.
