Warm feet in the morning

Beside the bed you take your first step in the morning and your last in the evening. If a runner lies there, cool parquet or tiles become a soft, warm surface. Unlike a large rug under the bed, it leaves the floor visible and also fits into small bedrooms. The selection includes oriental and modern runners; you will find further sizes under Bedroom Rugs.

Soft wool for bare feet

Where you walk barefoot, the feel underfoot counts. A hand-knotted runner with a normal-height pile of new wool is pleasantly soft yet firm. Kurk wool is even smoother: it comes from the shoulder and neck of the sheep and is particularly fine. If you like it thicker, choose a Gabbeh with a thick, dense pile; flat Kilims, by contrast, are light and quickly put aside.

One runner per side or a bed runner set

With a double bed, each side gets its own runner, ideally two pieces in a similar colour and length. The area under the bed stays free and is easy to vacuum. An alternative is a bed runner set: two side runners and one piece at the foot of the bed, matched in pattern and tone. If a single bed stands against the wall, one runner on the open side is enough.

The right length for the bed

A bed is usually around 200 cm long. A runner of 150 to 200 cm reaches from the bedside table to about the foot of the bed; let it start just under the bedside table so that you step straight onto it when you get up. For extra-long beds, runners up to 250 cm fit. Some floor should remain visible between the runner and the wall or wardrobe; widths of 60 to 80 cm are usually enough.

Calm colours for the bedroom

Muted tones work especially well in the bedroom: beige, cream, sand, grey or a soft blue. They calm the overall look and go with light bed linen and wooden furniture. Oriental runners with a light ground, for example from Nain, bring fine patterns without restlessness; modern runners in a single colour stay completely in the background. The cream rugs page shows more light pieces.

Frequently asked questions about bedroom runner rugs

One large rug or two runners?

Two runners are more flexible and quicker to clean; a large rug under the bed visually ties the room together. In small bedrooms, runners are usually the better choice.

How often does a bedroom runner need cleaning?

Beside the bed, a runner gets little wear; regular vacuuming is usually enough. A thorough wash every few years is worthwhile, for example by our rug cleaning service.
