The flokati rug originates from Greece, where the word “flokati” means “woolen blanket” or “thick shepherd's cloak”. Originally from the Pindus Mountains, the shepherd's rug became known far beyond the country's borders in the 1970s.

First, the warp threads, usually made of spun new wool yarn, are strung on a hand loom. New wool yarn is used for the weft, ensuring durability and dimensional stability. The high pile is created by a square placed between two warp threads – its circumference determines the eventual pile height.

The yarn wound around the square is cut by hand, producing a beautiful pile. The denser the rows, the heavier and higher in quality the flokati rug – at around 1,500 grams per square meter a flokati rug offers standard quality, while at around 3,000 grams it reaches top quality.

Only a special felting process completes production and gives the flokati its characteristic appearance. Water from mountain streams is channelled into round vats, where the rugs are felted, shrunk and consolidated for hours by the friction of the flowing water.

In the warm Greek sun the rugs dry quickly and, after a final quality check, can soon fill customers' living spaces with stylish elegance and comfort.

How to keep your flokati rug beautiful for a long time

When it comes to caring for a flokati correctly, a distinction must be made between natural wool and synthetic fiber. A flokati made of new wool is perfectly protected against moisture and dirt by the lanolin found naturally in wool. This wool wax makes water bead off and makes it difficult for dust and dirt to penetrate the fibers. As a general rule, always follow the manufacturer's instructions when cleaning.

Flokati rugs should be shaken out once a week and vacuumed regularly. Light soiling can easily be removed with a damp cloth and natural soap or sparkling water. Always dab – do not rub, as this can work the dirt deeper into the fibers. Depending on their size, small flokatis can also be washed by hand or in the washing machine – always only with lukewarm water and a gentle wool detergent. You should avoid chemical cleaners and household remedies such as baking powder, washing soda and ammonia. Heavier soiling is best removed by a specialist rug cleaning business.
