Hatschlu rugs are among the most valuable treasures of Turkmen knotting art and have delighted collectors at Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg since 1977. These rare nomadic rugs are distinguished by their exceptional colour intensity and their characteristic geometric patterns. In our range we stock exclusively hand-picked originals of these traditional Hatchlou rugs.
Hatschlu rugs come from the steppe regions of Turkmenistan, where they were knotted by the nomadic tribes of the region. The name derives from the Turkmen word for "cross", referring to the characteristic cross-shaped motifs in the patterns. These rugs were produced mainly between the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The knotters of Hatschlu rugs belonged to various Turkmen tribes that migrated along the trade routes between the Caspian Sea and Afghanistan. Their rugs served not only as floor coverings but also as tent decoration, saddle bags and valuable trade goods. The tradition of Turkaman rugs is closely connected to the history of Hatschlu weavings.
The defining feature of Hatschlu rugs is the octagonal medallions, usually arranged in rows. These main motifs, called güls, are framed by smaller geometric ornaments. Cross-shaped elements, which gave this rug type its name, are also typical. The borders mostly show stylised floral or vine motifs.
The colour palette of Hatchlou rugs is particularly characteristic: warm reds and browns dominate, complemented by deep blue, ivory and occasional green accents. These colours were produced with natural dyes such as madder, indigo and walnut hulls. The intense colour effect arises from the combination of traditional dyeing techniques with the high-quality wool of the region.
Hatschlu rugs are knotted exclusively from hand-spun sheep's wool sourced from the flocks of the nomadic tribes. The warp is usually made of wool, more rarely of goat hair. Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre. The asymmetrical knot, also known as the Senneh knot, is used.
The quality of these wool rugs shows in the even knotting and robust structure. Genuine Hatschlu rugs often display small irregularities that testify to their handmade origin. The pile is mostly sheared to medium height, lending the patterns a sculptural effect.
Hatschlu rugs are excellent for living spaces where their warm tones can come into their own. They harmonise particularly well with antique furniture and create an authentic oriental atmosphere. Thanks to their robust construction, they are also suitable for representative rooms.
Care involves regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment, these oriental rugs develop a beautiful patina over decades. Direct sunlight should be avoided to protect the historic colours.
