Silk rugs from Hereke

Hereke is a small town on the Gulf of Izmit, east of Istanbul. In the 19th century, rugs were knotted there for the Ottoman court, and to this day the name stands for particularly fine Turkish knotting. Hereke rugs made of silk usually show graceful floral and tendril patterns with a clear design.

A small selection

Our range of Hereke silk rugs is small. At present you will find only a few pieces here, all new, hand-knotted and in small sizes up to just over one metre in length. Most are multicoloured with a floral pattern, a few are beige. All are finely knotted, and the silk allows a clear, detailed design even on a small surface. The Hereke rugs page shows Hereke rugs made of wool; you will find larger silk pieces under Silk Rugs, for example Ghom rugs from Iran.

Small sizes, many possibilities

A small silk rug does not have to lie on the floor. Many people hang it on the wall like a picture or lay it on a chest of drawers. Silk is a strong, tear-resistant fibre; it shimmers in the light and changes its shade depending on the viewing angle.
