Large Oriental Rugs

A large oriental rug brings the sofa, armchairs and table together as one unit. Here you will find oriental rugs in large sizes, almost all hand-knotted, along with tips on planning.

A rug that anchors the room

A large oriental rug is more than a floor covering: it connects the seating area and the table and gives a spacious room a firm hold. Sizes from around 200 x 300 cm upwards are considered large. Here you will find only oriental rugs; the large rugs page shows other styles in large dimensions.

Planning the right size

First measure the room and mark the desired area on the floor with masking tape. Around 30 to 50 cm of floor should remain free around the rug, so that it looks embedded rather than squeezed in. In the living room, at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs stand on the rug. Under the dining table, it should extend far enough that even chairs pushed back still stand completely on it.

Common large sizes

The most common is 200 x 300 cm, followed by 250 x 350 cm, 300 x 400 cm and 250 x 300 cm. There are also oversizes up to 400 x 600 cm and beyond. For almost square rooms there are rugs with side lengths from 250 to over 400 cm, and for round tables round rugs with a diameter of 250 cm and more. As a rule of thumb, 200 x 300 cm fits a living room of around 20 m², while 250 x 350 cm is more suitable under a dining table for six people.

Which rugs come in large sizes

You will find a particularly large number of large pieces among Bidjar rugs, whose firm knotting keeps its shape even under heavy furniture, and among Tabriz rugs in 50 Raj. Ziegler rugs from Afghanistan and Pakistan bring generous, calm floral patterns into spacious rooms. They are joined by Moud, Nain, Mashhad, Keshan and large Kilims from Fars. Most pieces come from Persia, a large proportion from Afghanistan.

Weight, underlay and furniture

A large hand-knotted wool rug is heavy. Carry it with two people, roll it rather than fold it, and lay it out before the furniture goes back in. An anti-slip underlay protects parquet and keeps the corners flat. Under the feet of heavy furniture, castor cups spread the pressure. Rotate the rug by 180 degrees about once a year so that foot traffic and sunlight affect it evenly.

Frequently asked questions about large oriental rugs

Doesn't a large patterned rug look busy?

Not necessarily. A light ground or a generous pattern, as Ziegler and Nain rugs often have, looks calm even over a large area. With plain furniture, the pattern can certainly be bolder.

How do I clean a large oriental rug?

Vacuum regularly in the direction of the pile. A thorough wash is hardly possible at home with large sizes; that is what our rug cleaning service is for.
