100 x 150 cm is the size that sits between a mat and a living room rug. It covers a manageable area and suits anywhere a rug should mark a zone without taking over the whole room: in front of the sofa in a small flat, beneath a coffee table, in a reading corner or in a children's room.
For one-room flats, studies and narrow rooms this format is often the more realistic choice than a large rug that runs up against the furniture. It leaves floor visible and therefore reads as lighter.
With this format, placement decides a great deal. A rug of 100 x 150 cm in the middle of a large living room quickly looks like an island. Instead, lay it deliberately against a piece of furniture: in front of the sofa, beneath the coffee table or alongside the bed. That creates a relationship rather than an isolated patch.
For the seating area the rule is: the rug should be at least as wide as the coffee table and ideally extend a little beyond it. If the front feet of the sofa do not stand on it, keep a deliberate gap of about 20 centimetres, so that it does not look accidental.
This format exists in both worlds. Among the Oriental rugs you will find hand-knotted individual pieces whose pattern is matched to the compact area. The modern rugs offer quiet surfaces and discreet textures at this size, which do not visually fill a small room further.
If the area is not enough, the next rectangle up is usually a better solution than two small rugs side by side. For narrow, long routes, runners suit better. In reading corners and beneath round tables, round rugs work well, and for compact floor plans square rugs.
In smaller formats the rug often lies where a lot happens: the play corner, the desk, the sofa. Wool is hard-wearing and repels dirt, and a low pile is the easier choice to care for and lets castors run more smoothly. Regular vacuuming and turning the rug occasionally keep the surface even. Professional rug cleaning is worth arranging every few years, depending on how hard the rug is worked.
Morgenland Rugs is a family business in Hamburg's Speicherstadt. Whether 100 x 150 cm is enough for your floor area or a larger format carries it better, we are glad to settle in our rug consultation. If no standard size fits, we can tell you about made-to-measure rugs. In our showroom you can see the difference in size directly, side by side.
In small rooms yes, if the rug is at least as wide as the coffee table. In larger living rooms this format quickly looks too tight in front of a wide sofa.
As a rule, no. For the chairs to stay on the rug when pushed back, a dining table needs about 60 to 70 centimetres of margin all round.
