Rugs in 120 x 180 cm: the classic format for a single room

120 x 180 cm is one of the most bought rug sizes of all. It is large enough to accompany a seating corner or a bed, and small enough to work in rooms that do not offer large open areas. For bedrooms, studies, children's rooms and smaller living rooms this format is the usual starting point.

With hand-knotted rugs, 120 x 180 cm is also a format in which classical patterning already comes fully into its own. Medallion, border and corner spandrels are legible across this area, which is often no longer the case on smaller pieces.

Where this format fits

• Bedroom: across the foot of the bed or lengthways along one side, so that you step onto wool when you get up.
• Small living room: in front of the sofa with the front feet of the furniture on it.
• Study: beneath desk and chair, dampening footfall and the noise of castors.
• Children's room: as a play area that stands out clearly from the rest of the floor.
• Dining for two: beneath a small square table, provided the chairs stay on it.

Effect and placement

So that this format does not look accidental, it should always relate to a piece of furniture. In front of the sofa that means: at least as wide as the sofa itself, extending a little beyond it at the sides. In the bedroom the rug should show well clear of the bed at the foot end, otherwise the arrangement looks crowded.

Keep a gap to the wall all round, about 30 to 50 centimetres. A rug that runs up to the skirting board makes a room feel smaller than one that lets the floor breathe.

Oriental or modern

At 120 x 180 cm the choice is wide in both directions. In this format our Oriental rugs are hand-knotted individual pieces with a complete pattern drawing. Among the modern rugs you will find quiet surfaces, discreet textures and graphic patterns that settle well into smaller rooms.

Other sizes and shapes

If the seating area is larger, the next formats up are the better choice. For hallways and kitchens, runners suit. Beneath round tables and in reading corners, round rugs read more coherently, and in roughly square rooms square rugs.

Material and care

Most rugs in this format are made of wool: hard-wearing, warming and naturally dirt-repellent. A low pile is the more practical choice beneath desk chairs and in a dining area, while a high pile brings more comfort to a bedroom. Vacuum regularly, lift stains at once with clean water and turn the rug once a year. Professional rug cleaning is worth arranging every few years, depending on how hard the rug is worked.
