At 150 x 200 cm you reach the range in which a rug genuinely draws a seating area together. The format is wide enough to lie in front of a normal sofa and take in the coffee table completely, while staying compact enough for homes with medium-sized rooms.
It is therefore the typical choice for a living room in which a rug of 170 x 240 cm would already be too dominant, but one of 120 x 180 cm looks too tight.
Check the free floor area before buying, not the size of the room. Doors that swing open and radiators often limit the usable area more than expected. As a rule of thumb, allow a gap of 30 to 50 centimetres to the wall all round.
In front of the sofa the rug should extend beyond the armrests at the sides, or at least finish flush with them. A rug narrower than the sofa makes the seating area look restless. At a dining table, allow 60 to 70 centimetres of margin all round, otherwise the chairs tip over the edge when pushed back.
Both worlds are well represented in this format. Our Oriental rugs show complete classical patterning here as hand-knotted individual pieces. Among the modern rugs you will find plain surfaces, discreet textures and graphic designs that hold a seating area quietly together.
If the seating area grows, a larger rectangle is almost always a better solution than a second rug. For hallways and kitchens, runners suit better; beneath round dining tables, round rugs read more coherently; and in compact, roughly square rooms, square rugs.
Wool is the most common choice in this format: hard-wearing, warming and naturally dirt-repellent. Low pile suits dining areas and home offices, because chairs glide more easily and crumbs are simple to vacuum up. High pile brings more comfort in front of the sofa. Turn the rug once a year so that it ages evenly. Professional rug cleaning is worth arranging every few years, depending on how hard the rug is worked.
Morgenland Rugs is a family business in Hamburg's Speicherstadt. Whether 150 x 200 cm is enough for your seating area or the next size up carries it better, we are glad to settle in our rug consultation. If no standard size fits, we can tell you about made-to-measure rugs. In our showroom you can compare neighbouring sizes directly.
For a sofa with a coffee table in a medium-sized room, yes. Once armchairs are added, or if the sofa is wider than two metres, 170 x 240 cm is the more coherent choice.
About 30 to 50 centimetres all round. The visible band of floor makes a room look larger than a rug that reaches the wall.
