300 x 400 cm is the largest of the common rug sizes and covers twelve square metres of floor. At this scale a rug is no longer a furnishing item you add to a room but the ground on which the room is built. Seating group, side tables and often the adjoining furniture stand fully on it.

Formats like this belong in large living rooms, period rooms with high ceilings, expansive open-plan layouts and formal spaces. In an averagely proportioned room, by contrast, this measurement is nearly always too much.

Where this format fits

• Period buildings with high ceilings: where smaller rugs look lost against the height of the room.
• Long dining tables: for eight to ten people, including margin for the chairs.

Effect and placement

With this format, careful measuring is essential. Mark out 300 x 400 cm on the floor with masking tape before you decide. Check the swing of every door, the distance to radiators, and whether cupboard doors still open.

Here too: 30 to 50 centimetres of gap to the wall all round. If that band becomes too narrow, the effect tips from generous to wall-to-wall, and the room loses exactly the sense of space the large format is meant to emphasise.

A practical note on logistics: rugs of this size are delivered rolled and are heavy. Check in advance that the stairwell and doors allow the transport, and plan on two people for unrolling.

Wool is the most reliable choice at this scale, because it withstands heavy use, takes colour deeply and feels warm. In hand-knotted rugs a cotton foundation provides stability and keeps the surface lying flat. Large rugs should be turned yearly so that traffic routes are not worn on one side only. For a deep clean, professional rug cleaning makes sense, because pieces of this size can barely be treated properly at home.
