Rugs in 40 x 60 cm: the smallest format in the range

40 x 60 cm is not a living room rug but a piece placed for a purpose on a small area. At this size the point is not to define a room but to mark a single spot: the place inside the front door, the area in front of the sink, the patch beside the bed where your foot lands first in the morning.

With hand-knotted rugs this format is especially interesting, because here you get genuine handwork for very little floor area. Many small Oriental rugs are sample pieces or remainders from larger runs, and they show the same knot density as a large piece.

Where this format makes sense

• Entrance: as a place to set shoes down, or as a small accent of colour just inside the door.
• Kitchen: in front of the sink or the worktop, where you stand for longer.
• Bedroom: as a bedside mat on one side, when no large rug is to go under the bed.
• Bathroom and cloakroom: as a textile contrast to tiles, provided the room is dry enough.
• As a wall hanging: small hand-knotted pieces with a fine pattern read like a picture once hung.

What to watch at this size

Small rugs slip more easily than large ones, because there is barely any weight of their own on the floor. On smooth floors an anti-slip underlay is sensible, particularly in the entrance. Bear in mind too that a piece of 40 x 60 cm quickly looks lost in a larger room. It works where it serves a concrete purpose, not as a substitute for a living room rug that is too small.

A second point concerns the pattern: on a small area a large medallion does not come into its own. Fine, even patterning or plain surfaces read more calmly in this format.

Oriental or modern

Material and care

Small rugs almost always lie in heavily used places: at the door, in the kitchen, beside the bed. Wool has the advantage here, because it repels dirt naturally and is hard-wearing. Common questions

Is 40 x 60 cm large enough as a bedside mat?

For one side of the bed, yes, if you only want to cover the spot where you get up. If the rug is to run around the whole bed, larger formats or two runners are the better solution.

On parquet, tiles and laminate, yes. An anti-slip underlay solves the problem and protects the backing of the rug at the same time.
