40 x 60 cm is not a living room rug but a piece placed for a purpose on a small area. At this size the point is not to define a room but to mark a single spot: the place inside the front door, the area in front of the sink, the patch beside the bed where your foot lands first in the morning.

40 x 60 cm is not a living room rug but a piece placed for a purpose on a small area. At this size the point is not to define a room but to mark a single spot: the place inside the front door, the area in front of the sink, the patch beside the bed where your foot lands first in the morning.
With hand-knotted rugs this format is especially interesting, because here you get genuine handwork for very little floor area. Many small Oriental rugs are sample pieces or remainders from larger runs, and they show the same knot density as a large piece.
Small rugs slip more easily than large ones, because there is barely any weight of their own on the floor. On smooth floors an anti-slip underlay is sensible, particularly in the entrance. Bear in mind too that a piece of 40 x 60 cm quickly looks lost in a larger room. It works where it serves a concrete purpose, not as a substitute for a living room rug that is too small.
A second point concerns the pattern: on a small area a large medallion does not come into its own. Fine, even patterning or plain surfaces read more calmly in this format.
You will find both at this size. Hand-knotted individual pieces from our range of Oriental rugs bring pattern and patina to a small area. If you are after a quiet, plain solution, the modern rugs will supply it; in this format they are often offered as sets or bedside mats.
If 40 x 60 cm is too small, other formats are the better choice depending on the situation. For hallways and kitchens, runners offer length rather than area. In small rooms and reading corners, round rugs work well, and for compact, roughly square floor plans there are square rugs.
Small rugs almost always lie in heavily used places: at the door, in the kitchen, beside the bed. Wool has the advantage here, because it repels dirt naturally and is hard-wearing. A low pile is easier to vacuum and to shake out than a high one. Where needed, professional rug cleaning helps, particularly with pieces from the entrance.
Morgenland Rugs is a family business in Hamburg's Speicherstadt. If you are unsure whether this format suits your floor area, we are glad to settle it in our rug consultation. If you need a measurement that does not exist as standard, we can tell you about made-to-measure rugs. In our showroom you can compare small formats directly side by side.
For one side of the bed, yes, if you only want to cover the spot where you get up. If the rug is to run around the whole bed, larger formats or two runners are the better solution.
On parquet, tiles and laminate, yes. An anti-slip underlay solves the problem and protects the backing of the rug at the same time.
