A rug is more than just a piece of furnishing; it is the foundation of a room's acoustics and aesthetics. At Morgenland, material quality comes first. The wool determines not only the feel but also the lifespan and value of a work of art for the floor. Find out why wool has been regarded as the ultimate rug material for thousands of years.
Wool is a fascinating natural fibre that combines functionality with timeless beauty. As a renewable raw material, it offers textile properties that synthetic fibres can hardly match. The complex structure of wool fibres makes them the ideal material for high-quality home textiles.
For centuries, wool has been the heart of oriental knotting art. Ancient cultures valued the fibre for its thermal properties and its enormous elasticity. Morgenland continues this tradition by using only yarns that meet the highest standards of textile quality. Every knot tells of a centuries-old history of mastering the material.
Compared directly with synthetic fabrics, wool as a material impresses with its natural ability to recover. While synthetic fibres often stay permanently flat under pressure, wool fibres have a natural resilience that lifts the pile again and again. In addition, wool is fully biodegradable at the end of its life cycle – a decisive aspect for sustainable rug production.
Wool rugs are small natural wonders. Their physical make-up ensures a cosy indoor climate and incomparable comfort.
Natural thermal insulation: The crimped structure of the fibres forms air pockets that store heat. This ensures excellent energy efficiency in your living spaces.
Robustness and shape memory: Thanks to the high elasticity of the yarn structures, wool rugs are extremely hard-wearing and resistant to everyday wear.
Lanolin protection: The natural wool grease (lanolin) acts like a protective shield. It makes the fibres water- and dirt-repellent, which greatly increases ease of care.
Not all wool is the same. The origin of the animals and the way the wool is obtained determine the final textile quality of the rug.
High-quality virgin wool: Obtained directly from the living sheep, it is distinguished by a particularly high lanolin content and resilience. Ideal for heavily used living areas.
Fine merino wool: This fibre is particularly fine and soft. It is used for luxurious collections that call for a silky feel.
Kork wool: This is the particularly soft wool from the sheep's neck, which allows an extremely high sheen and fine knotting.
At Morgenland we follow the fibre's journey with the greatest care. The processing of the wool fibres follows strict quality guidelines.
Cleaning and carding: The raw wool is washed gently to preserve the valuable lanolin and then combed (carded) to align the fibres.
Spinning the yarn: Whether hand-spun or machine-finished, the twist of the yarn determines the later density of the pile.
Dyeing techniques: We rely on a combination of traditional plant dyes and modern, pollutant-free dyeing processes to guarantee the brilliance of the wool fabrics for decades.
Our collections are a tribute to craftsmanship. A Morgenland rug made of wool is an investment in durability.
Oriental classics: Timeless patterns based on robust wool material, which often gain even more beauty and character with age.
Modern interpretations: Innovative designs that translate the advantages of the natural fibre into a contemporary design language.
Wool as a sustainable fibre is our answer to fast-interior culture. We work closely with suppliers who guarantee certified standards in animal husbandry and production.
A high-quality wool rug needs little care, but the right care. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile removes loose particles without damaging the fibre structure. For more deeply embedded dirt, we recommend professional cleaning to preserve the material's natural oils.
