In oriental rugs, black is rarely the only colour, but often the most striking. A black or very dark ground makes flowers, tendrils and medallions stand out as if on a stage. The result is rugs with strong contrast that immediately catch the eye in bright rooms. Ziegler, Tabriz, Kashmar and Ghom

You will most often find black Ziegler rugs with large-scale floral patterns. They are joined by Tabriz rugs in 50 Raj, Kashmar rugs and Moud rugs, as well as fine Ghom rugs and Nain rugs in 9La. Floral and tendril patterns are especially common on a black ground, alongside classic medallions.

Hand-knotted, often with silk

All black oriental rugs in our range are hand-knotted. Alongside new wool and Kurk wool, many pieces contain silk, which creates a distinct sheen on the dark ground. Some of the rugs are very finely knotted, with more than 560,000 knots per square metre. Most come from Persia, some from Afghanistan.

Sizes

Our black oriental rugs are mainly rectangular, from the small 60 x 90 cm size up to large living-room rugs such as 200 x 300 cm and 250 x 350 cm. A few runners complete the range.

Furnishing with a black oriental rug

Black has the strongest effect on light floors and against light walls. With white furniture it creates a graphic look; with velvet in emerald or burgundy, an elegant, almost classic atmosphere. Gold and brass accents pick up the colours of many patterns.

Does a black rug show every bit of fluff?

Light fluff is more noticeable on a dark ground. However, the dense pattern of most black oriental rugs largely makes up for this; regular vacuuming is enough.

Does a black oriental rug suit small rooms?

Yes, if the walls and furniture are light. The rug then sets a clear accent without making the room look smaller. In dark rooms, a rug with a light pattern or a light border is the better choice.
