The cotton rug: an eco-friendly all-rounder

Cotton has been used to make beautiful rugs for centuries. Cotton is a natural and renewable raw material – a truly convincing advantage at a time of growing environmental awareness and sustainability. Hand-woven rugs made of 100 per cent pure cotton have a particularly soft surface and are stable, breathable and easy to care for. They attract neither dust nor mites and are therefore suitable for allergy sufferers. In addition, the top and underside of woven rugs are identical, so they can be used on both sides.

It stands out with its natural look, which adapts to any interior style you like. As well as a high level of comfort, cotton rugs impress with a huge choice of shapes, colours, patterns, textures and sizes.

Cotton rugs offer a wide choice of sizes, colours and designs

The choice of sizes for cotton rugs ranges from small mats and runners in all kinds of lengths and widths to rugs measuring 200 x 300 centimetres. Retailers offer round, oval, square and rectangular shapes in various thicknesses – with either straight edges or decorative fringes. As cotton rugs are easy to dye, there are almost no limits to the choice of colours.

Whether white, grey or black, bright red, pastel or multicoloured, whether geometric shapes, animal-skin patterns or retro designs – rugs made of cotton are unbeatable in their variety. Another feature of cotton rugs is that they can adapt to different rug styles. With beautiful ornaments and strong colours they are reminiscent of oriental Persian rugs; with folkloric patterns, warm colours, pompoms and fringes they recall ethnic-style rugs; and with subtle colours and patterns they resemble rugs in Scandinavian style.

Caring for a cotton rug could hardly be easier

Caring for a cotton rug is not difficult; if the size allows, they can even be washed in the washing machine – always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Regular care includes removing coarse dirt with the vacuum cleaner, by shaking or by beating the rug. Liquids should be blotted up as quickly as possible with a dry, absorbent cloth.

More stubborn stains can be removed with a special stain powder or cleaning foam. Please test the rug for colourfastness on an inconspicuous spot first. The fact that a woven cotton rug can be used on both sides makes unsightly stains simply disappear and protects against one-sided wear.

They also need little care, as they are very elastic and stable. Even pressure marks from furniture cannot harm them and disappear by themselves after a short time. They do not like being exposed to moisture for long periods. So when mopping, make sure they do not get wet – this applies especially to the fringes. If the rug is already heavily soiled, it is advisable to have large formats cleaned by a specialist.

The right rug for every room

In the living room, an easy-care cotton rug fits perfectly under any coffee table. In the middle of the room it draws attention and gives the space structure. Because it is so hard-wearing, it can be laid under any dining or kitchen table. Its variety of colours makes it the ideal rug for the children's room. Here it offers a wonderfully soft surface to play on and even forgives chocolate stains. A plain rug in the bedroom promises calm and softness. In the entrance area and hallway it welcomes everyone who comes in and, as a runner with lengths of up to three metres, convinces with its variety of colours and robustness. A cotton rug even fits in the bathroom! On parquet, laminate and stone floors in flats with thin walls, it also provides good impact sound insulation.

A cotton rug completes any interior style

Thanks to its range of shapes, colours and patterns, a cotton rug can be integrated into any interior style. A pared-back, modern interior looks particularly elegant with a cotton rug in a stylish grey, while a colourful rug with fringes shows off a country-house interior to perfection. With multicoloured stripes and patterns they create colour contrasts with minimalist furnishings; in a black-and-white mix of patterns it looks wonderfully purist.

We offer cotton rugs in a wide variety of shapes, colours and styles. They range from runners to large rugs – from plain rugs to oriental-patterned kilims – from subtle pastel shades to bright purple. With our affordable cotton rugs we give you plenty of freedom in designing your home, and we are happy to help you find your favourite piece with quality and expertise.

Frequently asked questions about cotton rugs

Are cotton rugs washable?

Yes, cotton rugs are indeed washable. They are easy to clean and care for, making them a practical choice for different areas of your home, e.g. the bedroom, the living room, the kitchen and even the bathroom. Cotton rugs are not only soft and cosy underfoot but also add warmth and colour to your living space. They are available in a wide range of sizes, colours and patterns, giving you plenty of options to choose from. In addition, cotton rugs are light and therefore easy to handle and care for. Whether you are looking for a large or a small cotton rug, they are the perfect choice for improving the comfort and look of your home.

Are cotton rugs good quality?

Cotton is generally considered a high-quality rug fibre. It is soft underfoot yet fairly durable. It resists stains well and provides good insulation. Overall, cotton is an excellent choice for areas with light to medium foot traffic.

Do cotton rugs get dirty easily?

One of the advantages of cotton rugs is their good stain resistance. Cotton fibres tend to repel water-based stains because they are absorbent. Oil-based stains must be cleaned immediately for the best results. Overall, cotton resists stains better than wool, but not as well as synthetic rugs. Regularly cleaning up spills helps keep cotton rugs in good condition.
