Dark brown rugs in the room

A dark brown rug anchors a room. The colour recalls earth, walnut and dark chocolate and creates a cosy, sheltered mood. It is particularly effective against light walls, where it forms a calm counterpoint, and with furniture in cream, linen or light wood.

In the dining room

Under the dining table, dark brown is a practical and elegant choice: the colour forgives crumbs and marks and makes tables in oak or glass shine. Sizes such as 200 x 300 cm or 250 x 350 cm offer enough space for six to ten chairs. We show more sizes for the dining area under Dining Room Rugs.

In the living room and study

In the living room, a dark brown rug anchors light sofas and gives the room depth. In a study, the colour suits bookshelves, leather and brass lamps and creates a focused, calm atmosphere. Our living room rugs offer more inspiration. A medallion in the middle of the room sets a classic accent, while an all-over field looks calmer.

Which dark brown rugs does Morgenland offer?

Almost all our dark brown rugs are hand-knotted, and the rest are hand-woven. Half come from Persia, just under a third from Afghanistan and the rest mainly from India. Four in five show classic patterns, and nearly all are made of pure virgin wool. The classic pieces are Oriental rugs such as Tabriz, Ziegler and Baluch, and the modern ones are mainly simple Gabbeh and Loribaft rugs with minimalist patterns.

Tabriz and Ziegler

Tabriz rugs are the most common, many of them in the 40 Raj quality, with large medallions on a dark brown ground. Ziegler rugs from Afghanistan, by contrast, show generous tendrils in muted shades of brown and therefore look calmer and more modern.

Baluch and Gabbeh

Baluch rugs from the border region between Iran and Afghanistan are known for their dark, subdued colours, in which brown comes together with red and blue. Gabbeh rugs from India with simple surfaces and fine textures look more modern. The dark brown pieces also include some older rugs that are 25 years old or more.

Sizes and shapes

Nine out of ten dark brown rugs are rectangular, plus some runners and a few square designs. Common sizes are 150 x 200 cm, 200 x 300 cm and 170 x 240 cm, for large rooms 250 x 350 cm and for small spaces 60 x 90 cm.

Which colours go with dark brown?

  • Cream and linen for a light, warm counterpoint.
  • Turquoise and petrol as a fresh contrast.
  • Mustard yellow and ochre for a lively retro look.
  • Sage and olive green for a nature-inspired colour scheme.
  • Brass and copper as shiny accents.

Frequently asked questions about dark brown rugs

Does a dark brown rug make the room dark?

On a dark floor, it can. On light parquet, tiles or stone, on the other hand, dark brown creates a beautiful contrast. A design with light areas in the pattern breaks up the surface further.

What makes Baluch rugs special?

Baluch rugs are knotted by nomads and in villages and usually have a dark, rich colour palette. Their patterns are geometric, often with small, repeating motifs, and the wool feels soft and has a slight sheen. Many pieces feature dark blue and red alongside the brown, which gives them a special depth.

Dark brown or chocolate brown?

Dark brown is earthier, chocolate brown warmer and redder. You will find a dedicated selection among the chocolate brown rugs, and lighter variants among the light brown rugs.

From light to dark, you will find all shades of brown under Brown Rugs.
