Grey rugs in the oriental style

Classic oriental rugs thrive on red, blue and beige. Grey was long the exception – and that is exactly why a grey oriental rug looks so special today: it brings the pattern, knotting craft and depth of an oriental rug into a room without dominating it with colour. On this page you will find only oriental rugs in grey, light grey, silver, dark grey and anthracite. You will find modern designs in our Grey Rugs collection.

Keshan, Nain and Tabriz in grey

Grey Keshan rugs with a medallion are particularly common. They are joined by Nain rugs in the qualities 6La, 9La and 12La, as well as Tabriz rugs. Ziegler and Ariana rugs complete the selection; their generous patterns look especially serene in grey. Most pieces come from Persia, some from Afghanistan, and a few from India, Pakistan and China.

New wool, Kurk wool and silk

Almost all grey oriental rugs in our range are hand-knotted. The pile is made of new wool or Kurk wool, the fine wool from the shoulder and neck area of the sheep. Some of the rugs have silk knotted into them, which makes the pattern shimmer silver depending on how the light falls. The knot density ranges from around 160,000 to roughly one million knots per square metre.

Sizes and shapes

Most grey oriental rugs are rectangular, often in large sizes such as 200 x 300 cm or 250 x 350 cm. For hallways and entrance halls there are grey oriental runners; round and square pieces are the exception.

Furnishing with a grey oriental rug

A grey oriental rug brings tradition into clean, modern rooms. With concrete, glass and black metal it looks calm and refined; with light wood and linen, soft and inviting. If you want to add accents, combine silver grey with petrol or mustard yellow; anthracite gains warmth from cognac and brass.

Frequently asked questions about grey oriental rugs

Are there genuine oriental rugs in grey?

Yes. Classic designs such as Keshan, Nain or Tabriz are also knotted in shades of grey and silver. Almost all grey oriental rugs in our range are hand-knotted, and most of them come from Persia.

Does a grey oriental rug go with modern furniture?

Very well. The understated grey takes the severity out of the pattern, so the rug also suits simple sofas, glass and metal.

How do I care for a grey oriental rug?

Vacuum it regularly in the direction of the pile and rotate it occasionally so that it is exposed to light evenly. For a thorough clean, we offer professional rug cleaning.
