Light blue rugs in the room

Light blue is the colour for rooms that should feel airy. A light blue rug reflects a lot of light and creates a gentle transition between floor and wall. In Oriental rugs, light blue often appears together with ivory, sand and delicate shades of pink, which makes the colour look soft and almost washed out.

In the bedroom and nursery

In the bedroom, light blue brings calm without feeling cold, especially with linen, light wood and white. The colour is also popular in children’s rooms; small sizes such as 80 x 120 cm or 60 x 90 cm fit in front of the bed or in the play corner. You will find more ideas among the nursery rugs.

In the living room and dining area

Under a dining table or a seating group, a large light blue rug noticeably brightens the room. Sizes such as 200 x 300 cm or 250 x 300 cm offer enough space for chairs and armchairs to stand fully on the rug. We also show suitable designs under Dining Room Rugs.

Which light blue rugs does Morgenland offer?

Almost all our light blue rugs are hand-knotted. Just under half come from Afghanistan, a quarter from Persia and the rest mainly from Pakistan and India. Around one rug in seven is a modern design. These modern rugs mostly come from India: designer rugs, Gabbeh designs and modern kilims, often plain, abstract or striped. All the others are Oriental rugs with classic patterns.

Ziegler and Kazak

Ziegler rugs make up the largest share. They draw on designs created in the 19th century for the European market, with generous tendrils and muted colours. Kazak rugs, by contrast, rely on bold geometric shapes modelled on Caucasian originals. Today both are knotted mainly in Afghanistan; you will find more designs under Afghan rugs.

Nain and other Persian rugs

Among the Persian designs are fine Nain rugs in light blue and ivory, often with silk, as well as pieces with floral and medallion patterns. Overall, all-over fields are the most common, followed by medallions and floral motifs. Plain light blue rugs are rare.

Sizes and shapes

Most light blue rugs are rectangular, and about one in ten is a runner. Alongside large sizes such as 200 x 300 cm, there are many small rugs from 60 x 90 cm, which suit the hallway or work as bedside rugs. Square and round rugs are the exception.

Which colours go with light blue?

  • White and ivory for a clear, bright room.
  • Sand and beige for a warm, natural effect.
  • Dusky pink and powder pink, which appear next to light blue in many Oriental patterns.
  • Light grey and silver for a cool, modern combination.
  • Light wood such as birch or ash.

Frequently asked questions about light blue rugs

Is a light blue rug delicate?

Light colours show stains sooner than dark ones. On patterned Oriental rugs this is less noticeable, because the pattern breaks up the surface. Hand-knotted wool rugs can also be cleaned professionally.

How do I recognise a Ziegler rug?

Typical features are generous blossoms and tendrils that cover the entire field, often without a strict central medallion. The colours are muted and harmoniously graded, so that light blue, ivory and rosé flow into one another. As a result, a Ziegler never looks heavy, even in modern rooms, but elegant and relaxed.

Light blue or sea blue?

Light blue is more delicate and almost pastel, while sea blue is stronger and fresher. If you are looking for a clearer accent of colour, you will find it among the sea blue rugs; the dark blue rugs offer even more depth.

All the shades of blue are brought together under Blue Rugs.
