Buy high-pile rugs online: soft, fluffy and cosy

They have been in vogue since the sixties – long-pile eye-catchers in every conceivable colour, from subtle cream to ultra-orange or pink. High-pile rugs can be draped impressively or decorate special areas. They are the exclusive counterpart to the robust office and everyday rug, a visual invitation to chill out and switch off.

High-pile, long-pile and shaggy rugs: the differences

The terms are often used synonymously, but describe different pile heights and textures:

Name

Pile height

Characteristics

Typical feel

High pile

15–30 mm

Soft, cosy, good for living spaces

Pleasantly fluffy, not too deep

Long pile

30–50 mm

More volume, stronger cushioning

Feet sink in slightly

Shaggy

from 40 mm

Very long, shaggy, striking texture

Plush, extremely soft, cuddly effect

All three variants are ideal as a living room or bedroom rug. The choice depends on your personal need for comfort and the look you want.

High-pile rugs for more warmth and cosiness

Elegant rooms benefit from high-quality rugs that complement luxurious furnishings. Their texture alone sets contrasting accents and makes mirror-smooth surfaces shine or matt ones glow softly. A high-pile rug provides warmth with style. You feel it not only underfoot, but also in the indoor climate and the overall effect. If you long for heavenly harmony, a high-pile rug will let you take off.

Choosing a high-pile rug in the right size

The ideal size depends on the room and the furniture layout:

What makes high-pile rugs so special?

From a pile height of 1.5 centimetres upwards, a rug is called high-pile; if the upright fibres are longer than 5 centimetres, they form a long pile. High-pile rugs have a particularly soft surface. They are usually plain or boldly patterned. While rugs woven to strict patterns present themselves as artistic and richly detailed, high-pile rugs focus on the fluff factor.

Woven, tufted or knotted high-pile rugs: the production methods

High-pile rugs can be made in different ways:

  • Rugs such as flokati are woven in a special process in which the warp threads are left standing at the desired pile height and cut open. This creates a firm base and a fluffy side.
  • Tufting uses pile yarn that is inserted into a backing fabric. This creates pile tufts on one side of the rug. At the right length, these loops form a loop-pile rug. If they are cut or sheared, a cut-pile rug is created. If the pile is cut at different heights, interesting patterns appear on the tufted fabric.
  • Knotted rugs are among the classics. Pieces with pictorial designs or in one consistent colour are made by machine or by hand.

The history of high-pile rugs: from flokati to shaggy

They are ancient. The first rugs have existed since the beginning of human communal life. With the keeping of domestic animals and the shepherds came the first high-pile, flokati-like rugs. They kept people warm. Dense high-pile rugs existed in the ancient Orient and in the Renaissance.

Around 1900 they adorned palaces and upper-middle-class homes. After an interlude dominated by flatweave rugs, the high-pile rug reclaimed its territory in the 1960s and won people over as a soft shaggy on the sofa landscape and in front of the fireplace.

High-pile rugs for living rooms and modern living spaces

The charm of a room comes from the composition of its details, the coherent harmony that turns walls and floor into what we call a room. A high-pile rug can be made in a wide variety of designs. In a classic oriental style, its colours and patterns blend into the overall picture; minimalist and clear, it comes in subtle colours and takes the chill off pared-back furnishings; as an original flokati, it brings a hippie mood into the room.

High-pile rugs in cream, grey, beige and bright colours

You can choose entirely according to your taste: if you love things loud and colourful, pick your high-pile rug in a vivid colour. Are you more the understated type? Then take a look at our high-pile rugs in muted colours. With Nepalese patterns or Iranian gabbehs, a touch of the exotic enters your living room.

High-pile rugs made of wool, viscose and easy-care synthetic fibres

You will find high-pile rugs made of different materials. This makes it easy for you to choose a high-pile piece for your purposes:

  • Virgin wool is one of the classics. This original material is still the favourite for many people today.
  • Synthetic fibres are conquering living rooms and studies. Easy to clean, robust and colourfast, they open up new uses for high-pile rugs.
  • As an addition, viscose ensures a dense, velvety and, above all, long-lasting pile.

Back to the seventies, simply rustic or pure luxury

Retro and shabby style are in. What could go better with them than a shaggy rug? These tousled, shaggy pieces are the rebellious counterpart to the flokati and fascinate both visually and to the touch.

High-pile rugs for warm rooms and soft living comfort

When it gets cold and unpleasant outside, when you feel like a cosy break or simply want to feel good, you need a high-pile rug.

Which high-pile rug suits your style?

You live consciously? A flokati suits your lifestyle! Sustainable, natural and with a little nostalgic pinch of love & peace, it flatters your eyes and your feet. Do you belong more to the champagne set? Then fine, heavy high-pile rugs from Nepal, Iran or Turkey will lie at your feet.

How to clean and care for high-pile rugs

1. Regular vacuuming should go without saying. If the size allows, also beat the rug out and air it in the fresh air.

2. Regular brushing against the pile prevents flattened areas.

3. Remove stains as soon as possible. Test cleaning agents on an inconspicuous spot to avoid lightening the colour.

Are high-pile rugs washable?

As long as the high-pile rug is not too large, it can usually be washed in the washing machine. However, check the washing instructions on the label first.

Buying a high-pile rug: living comfort between luxury and cosiness

Want to buy a high-pile rug? There is a lot to be said for it: they come in many shapes, sizes and colours for every interior style. They provide warmth and a pleasant indoor climate and offer something cosy even to advocates of strict functionalism.

Frequently asked questions about high-pile rugs

1. Which high-pile rug suits the living room?

For the living room, high-pile rugs that are large enough to visually unite the seating area are a good choice. Sizes such as 160 x 230 cm or 200 x 300 cm are particularly popular. Subtle colours such as beige, cream or grey look calm and modern, while colourful high-pile rugs set stronger accents.

2. Are high-pile rugs suitable for bedrooms?

Yes, high-pile rugs are very well suited to bedrooms because they are soft, warm and cosy. They can be used beside the bed as runners or as a large rug under the bed. Light colours such as cream, beige or grey in particular create a calm atmosphere and feel pleasant underfoot in the morning.

3. Which material is best for high-pile rugs?

High-pile rugs made of virgin wool look natural, warm and high-quality. Synthetic fibres are easy to care for, colourfast and often more attractively priced. Viscose can give the pile a particularly soft, elegant feel. Which material is best depends on whether the rug should be particularly luxurious, robust or easy to care for.
