Kelim Silk rugs combine the flat weaving art of kelims with the elegance of precious silk to create exceptional works of art. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have received a select choice of these special textiles since 1977, captivating through their shining surface and fine structure. Our hand-picked collection comprises both classic and contemporary designs from the renowned weaving centres of Persia.

Origin and history of Kelim Silk rugs

The tradition of kelim weaving in Persia reaches back several thousand years, with the use of silk representing a particular refinement. Originally kelims arose as practical floor coverings for nomadic tribes, but the introduction of silk as a weaving material elevated them to luxurious objects for wealthy households. From the 16th century onwards specialised workshops for Silk Kelim rugs developed particularly in the cities of Isfahan, Tabriz and Nain.

The Persian weavers perfected the art of processing the finest silk threads into flat but nonetheless robust weavings over centuries. Unlike knotted rugs, with kelims the pattern is integrated directly into the weaving process, which means both sides are usable. This technique demands exceptional skill, especially in handling the delicate silk threads.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Kelim Silk rugs are distinguished by their characteristic flat structure and silky sheen, which varies depending on the angle of the light. The colour palette ranges from classic earth tones through luminous red and blue nuances to modern pastel compositions. Typical motifs include geometric ornaments, stylised blossoms and traditional medallions, woven with exceptional precision.

The geometric patterns often follow centuries-old traditions, with each region having developed its characteristic designs. Particularly notable are the fine contours and clear delineation of the colour areas, created through the special kelim weaving technique. The natural sheen of the silk enhances the effect of the patterns and gives each rug a lively radiance.

Material and knotting technique

Genuine Kelim Silk rugs are woven exclusively from high-quality natural silk obtained from silkworms. The silk is carefully spun and dyed with natural or high-grade synthetic dyes. The weaving technique differs fundamentally from knotting: weft and warp threads are interwoven so that no pile layer arises but rather a smooth, two-sided usable surface.

The quality of a Kelim Silk rug shows in the evenness of the weave and the fineness of the silk threads used. High-quality examples have a density of 200,000 to over 400,000 knots per square metre, although with kelims technically one should speak of weave density. This high density enables the rendering of the finest details and provides the characteristic stability of the weave.

Interior styling and care

Kelim Silk rugs are excellent for representative living areas, bedrooms and studies, where their elegant sheen comes especially well into its own. Owing to their flat structure they fit optimally under low furniture and are ideal for modern, minimally furnished rooms. The shining surface reflects light and can visually enlarge rooms.

Care of Silk Kelim rugs requires special attention. Regular vacuuming with low suction is enough for daily cleaning. For heavier soiling you should without fail commission a professional rug cleaning, since silk reacts sensitively to moisture and aggressive cleaning agents. With appropriate treatment these precious textiles remain beautiful for decades.
