Pure silk is a natural material that inspires enthusiasm and fascination like no other. It is soft, light and elegant. It reflects the light and creates a refined sheen. A hand-knotted silk rug is therefore a particularly valuable piece of craftsmanship. To this day, rugs made of the finest Kashmir silk have lost none of their fascination. They are still regarded as luxury goods whose quality is evident at first glance.
The number of knots per square metre reflects the value and fineness of the material being worked. Silk rugs are almost exclusively made with very high knot densities, as a rule by experienced and particularly talented knotters. The fine nature of the silk thread allows up to 1,000,000 knots per square metre. With pure silk rugs, however, far higher knot densities are also possible. At 25 by 25 knots per square centimetre (!), the maximum possible density is reached. This corresponds to an incredible 6,000,000 knots per square metre.
It all begins with the silk moth. After mating, the female lays up to 400 eggs. The caterpillars hatch and feed exclusively on the leaves of the mulberry tree. A month later, they begin to spin a cocoon around themselves. These farmed caterpillars never hatch, however, because their cocoon is too valuable. Up to 20 of these cocoons are unwound at the same time and processed into a single strand. The raw silk can then be traded.
Silk is used in many different ways when a rug is knotted. It can be used to set visual accents, in which case only certain areas of the pattern are knotted in pure silk to create stylish effects. Other rugs have only a silk pile, while the warp and weft are made of another material. Only in pure silk rugs are the warp, weft and pile all made of genuine silk. Garish colours and patterns are avoided in silk rugs.
Today, most silk rugs are hand-knotted in China and India as well as in Turkey and Iran. In India, the Kashmir region is particularly famous for its beautiful rugs; in Turkey, it is the cities of Hereke and Kayseri. Persian silk rugs also carry their origin in their name. Isfahan, Ghom and Tabriz stand for the high art of rug knotting. Rugs from China now draw heavily on the patterns of Hereke and Ghom rugs, but in terms of silk quality and knotting they are of the highest standard.
Precious as silk rugs are, cleaning a Kashmir silk rug is manageable with a little care. Regular vacuuming – at least once a week – removes dust and dirt particles. Pay particular attention to the direction of the pile, as silk rugs should not be vacuumed against the grain if at all possible. To protect the rug, it is also advisable to turn it every six months, by 90 or 180 degrees depending on the shape of the rug and the space available. This prevents uneven wear, and your Kashmir silk rug stays beautiful for a long time.
For small stains, a lint-free woollen cloth and warm water are helpful. It is important to remove the stain by dabbing, not rubbing. Pressure marks can also be smoothed out with a damp cloth: simply rub over the affected area several times in the direction of the pile. For heavier soiling, a professional rug cleaning will restore your rug's lustre.
