Origin and history of Lilian rugs

Lilian rugs come from the region of the same name south of Arak in the Iranian province of Markazi. This area has been known for its rug knotting for centuries and belongs to the wider Hamadan region. The knotting tradition in Lilian developed in parallel with other significant centres such as Borchalou rugs and Jozan rugs.

The villages of the Lilian region knot their rugs according to traditional patterns passed from generation to generation. In the first half of the 20th century in particular, Lilian rugs gained international recognition for their quality and their typical design. Today, both classical patterns and modern interpretations of traditional designs are knotted in the region.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Lilian rugs are distinguished by their characteristic Herati pattern, also known as the "fish-bone pattern". This base pattern is often dominated by a central medallion accompanied by four smaller corner motifs. The border typically shows a combination of floral elements and geometric motifs, lending the rug a harmonious frame.

The colour palette of Lilian rugs moves mainly in warm earth tones. Rust red, dark blue, beige and cream form the base colours, complemented by accents in green, yellow or brown. This natural colour scheme makes Liliyan rugs versatile furnishings that integrate well into various interior styles. Similar to Garawan rugs, Lilian knotted works also rely on proven colour combinations.

Material and knotting technique

Lilian rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool used both for the knots and the weft. The warp consists mostly of cotton, which lends the rug stability. Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 120,000 knots per square metre, resulting in medium to good quality.

Knotting is done with the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), which gives the rugs a characteristic structure. The pile height is medium-high, making the rugs both robust and comfortable. These properties make Lilian rugs long-lived floor coverings that retain their shape and colour even with regular use.

Interior styling and care

Lilian rugs are excellent for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Their warm colour scheme and classic patterns suit both traditional and modern interior styles. The medium knot density makes them ideal for normal living areas while at the same time offering enough comfort for walking barefoot.

Care of Lilian rugs is straightforward. Regular vacuuming and occasional rotation suffice for daily care. For heavier soiling a professional rug cleaning is recommended. Like all Persian rugs, Lilian rugs too develop a beautiful patina over the years that underlines their character.
