Moud rugs are among the most exclusive knottings of Persia and have been selected with particular care at our Hamburg rug house Morgenland since 1977. These exceptional oriental rugs are made in the Iranian city of Moud and delight collectors worldwide with their extraordinary fineness and artistic design. With us you will find hand-picked examples of this sought-after rug tradition in various sizes and designs.
The town of Moud lies in the Iranian province of Khorasan and has established itself over centuries as an important centre of rug knotting. The Moud knotters, sometimes also spelled Mood, developed an independent tradition that combines the Persian visual vocabulary with exceptional technical perfection. As early as the 19th century, these rugs earned recognition for their high knot density and precise execution.
Rug knotting in Moud was decisively shaped by its proximity to important trade routes, which allowed different stylistic influences to be absorbed and developed into a characteristic visual language. Today, Moud rugs are among the most sought-after collector's pieces in Persian rugs, since only a few workshops continue the traditional techniques in their original quality.
Moud rugs are distinguished by their extraordinarily detailed patterns and harmonious colour scheme. Typical features are central medallions with floral decorations surrounded by symmetrically arranged corner fields. The patterning frequently shows stylised palmettes, rosettes and intertwining vine work in the classical Persian tradition. Particularly characteristic are the finely worked borders with several accompanying bands that elegantly frame the main field.
The colour palette of Moud rugs traditionally moves in warm earth tones — from deep red and bordeaux through warm beige to elegant blue and green. Silk is often used for accents and details, which makes certain pattern elements stand out particularly clearly. This combination of wool and silk gives the rugs their characteristic vividness and the noble sheen that varies with the angle of light.
Moud rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool, with genuine silk used for special accents. The knot density typically lies between 250,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, making these rugs among the finest of their kind. The symmetrical Turkish knot is used, which provides particular stability and precision. This demanding technique requires years of experience from the knotters and the utmost care.
Producing a single Moud rug can take several months to years depending on size and complexity. The base framework consists of strong cotton, which ensures even tension. The colours used come from natural dyes, lending the rugs their characteristic colour depth and durability.
A Moud rug is excellently suited to representative living areas such as drawing rooms, dining rooms or studies, where its artistic design comes fully into its own. Thanks to its high knot density and robust workmanship these rugs are also suitable for more frequented areas. They harmonise with both classic and modern interior styles and set elegant accents in any room.
Care of a Moud rug requires regular, gentle vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment, these high-grade oriental rugs develop an attractive patina over the years and can be passed down across generations. It is important to protect them from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt we present a carefully curated collection of authentic Moud rugs in various sizes and designs.
