Natural-Coloured Rugs

Natural tones look original and calm, like undyed wool or jute. Almost all our natural-coloured rugs are modern Gabbeh and Loribaft rugs, plus a few Oriental rugs from Afghanistan.

Natural-coloured rugs in the room

Natural colours are the tones of sheep’s wool, jute and linen: light ecru, warm grey, soft brown. A natural-coloured rug looks honest and unfussy and suits rooms with wood, stone, plants and plenty of daylight particularly well. It does not push itself to the fore but gives the room a calm, homely base.

In the living room

In the living room, natural-coloured rugs suit Scandinavian, Japanese-inspired or rustic interiors. Sizes such as 170 x 240 cm or 200 x 300 cm bring the sofa and coffee table together without dominating the room. Our living room rugs show examples of complete seating groups.

In the hallway

A good one in five natural-coloured rugs is a runner, many of them between two and four metres long. In the hallway, the natural tone links the entrance and living spaces and combines well with wooden and stone floors. You will find long runners for entrance halls and corridors among the hallway rugs.

Which natural-coloured rugs does Morgenland offer?

Almost all our natural-coloured rugs have a modern design. Around three quarters are hand-knotted, and a good quarter are hand-woven. More than half come from Persia, just under a third from India. Calm surfaces, stripes and simple borders are typical, rather than large medallions. A very few are Oriental rugs: Ariana rugs from Afghanistan with field patterns in natural tones.

Gabbeh and Loribaft

Persian Gabbeh rugs make up the largest share, followed by Loribaft rugs. Both are knotted from robust wool and often show natural tones in fine, lively gradations. Loribaft rugs are a little more finely knotted and look calmer.

Jute and modern kilims

In addition, there are rugs made of jute, a robust plant fibre with a natural texture, as well as modern, flat-woven kilims with stripes or graphic patterns. They are lighter than knotted rugs and suit rooms with a lot of foot traffic.

Sizes and shapes

Just under two thirds of the natural-coloured rugs are rectangular, and a good fifth are runners. Unlike many other shades, there is also a small selection of round and oval rugs here, for example for a round dining table or a reading corner. You will find more designs under Round Rugs.

Which colours go with natural tones?

  • White and limewash shades for a light, calm room.
  • Sage, olive green and moss for a nature-inspired colour palette.
  • Terracotta and brick red as warm accents.
  • Black and anthracite for a modern contrast.
  • Wood, rattan, linen and stone as matching materials.

Frequently asked questions about natural-coloured rugs

Are natural-coloured rugs undyed?

Not always. Many Gabbeh and Loribaft rugs show the natural colours of the wool, while others are dyed in nature-like tones. You will find the exact description with each product.

What is the difference from off-white?

Natural colours include ecru, grey, beige and light brown. Off-white is much lighter and almost white. You will find a dedicated selection of very light tones among the off-white rugs.

Is a jute rug suitable for every room?

Jute is robust and pleasantly textured but does not cope well with moisture. It is well suited to living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, while wool rugs are the better choice in the bathroom or right by the sink. Stains on jute should be removed as dry as possible.

Are there also sandy, warmer tones?

Yes. Warmer, more yellowish variants are shown by the sand-coloured rugs, which are mainly classic Persian rugs.

You will find all beige and natural tones together under Beige Rugs.
