Petrol Blue Rugs

Petrol blue combines blue and green into a deep, elegant shade. You will find the colour in hand-knotted Oriental rugs such as Ziegler and Kazak from Afghanistan and in modern designs.

Petrol blue rugs in the room

Petrol is a colour with character. It looks calmer than turquoise and livelier than dark blue, which is why it suits modern and classic rooms alike. Petrol shows to particularly good effect against light walls and with warm materials such as wood, leather and brass.

In the kitchen and hallway

Many of our petrol blue rugs come in small sizes such as 60 x 90 cm, 70 x 140 cm or 100 x 150 cm. They suit the kitchen, the entrance area or the hallway as a runner, where the dark, patterned surface hides everyday marks well. You will find more ideas under Hallway Rugs.

In the living room

In the living room, a petrol blue rug sets a rich accent, for example with a grey or cognac-coloured sofa. Sizes from 150 x 200 cm suit a seating group. We show more designs among the living room rugs.

Which petrol blue rugs does Morgenland offer?

Around three quarters of our petrol blue rugs are hand-knotted. More than half are Afghan rugs, and a quarter come from India. About two thirds show classic Oriental patterns, while a third have a modern design.

Ziegler, Kazak and Loribaft

Ziegler rugs are the most common, with petrol often forming the ground behind light tendrils. The pattern usually covers the whole field, so the rug looks balanced even when furniture hides part of it. Kazak rugs bring bold, geometric patterns with large diamonds and stars that draw on Caucasian models. Loribaft rugs show calm surfaces with natural-looking colour gradients.

Modern designs

Among the modern rugs are plain and abstract designs, some hand-woven or hand-tufted, a few with viscose, which gives the surface a slight sheen. These designs suit pared-back interiors especially well, where the rug is meant to make its impact mainly through its colour.

Sizes and shapes

Most petrol blue rugs are rectangular, and a good one in ten is a runner, usually between two and three metres long. There are only a few round designs. Very large sizes are rarer in this shade than in dark blue, so for a large seating group it is worth filtering specifically for 170 x 240 cm and larger.

Which colours go with petrol blue?

  • Mustard yellow and ochre for a strong contrast.
  • Cognac and rust, which make the blue-green appear warmer.
  • Light grey and white for a calm, modern room.
  • Brass and gold as elegant accents.
  • Dark wood such as walnut.

Frequently asked questions about petrol blue rugs

Is petrol more blue or more green?

Petrol is a blue with a distinct share of green. Depending on the light, sometimes the blue and sometimes the green comes through more strongly. If you are looking for a clearer blue, you will find it among the sea blue rugs.

Does petrol look too dark in small rooms?

Not necessarily. A rug with light patterns or a smaller size leaves enough floor visible and keeps the room open. Strong, plain surfaces, on the other hand, work best in larger, bright rooms.

Can petrol be combined with red?

Yes, and with Oriental rugs this pairing is a classic: many petrol blue Ziegler and Kazak rugs carry red or rust-coloured details in the pattern. Cushions or an armchair in rust pick this up, while walls in white or light grey keep the contrast calm.

You will find all shades of blue under Blue Rugs; the dark blue rugs show deeper tones.
