Almost a square

At 180 x 200 cm there are only 20 centimetres between width and length, so a rug in this format looks almost square. The page shows pieces around 170 to 189 cm wide and 190 to 215 cm long; some of them are classified as square rugs. This proportion is unusual, because most rugs are considerably longer than they are wide.

A small selection

Rugs in this size are rare; the selection is small and changes with every new piece. It is mainly oriental: Moud rugs from eastern Iran, Persian Gabbeh with a thick, high pile, Kilims from Afghanistan and older Kilims, plus Yalameh, Sarough, Bidjar, Hamadan, Farahan and Kazak. Most pieces come from Persia, some from Afghanistan and Pakistan. All are made of new wool, almost all are hand-knotted. Multicoloured rugs are the most common, alongside red, dark blue and dark beige.

What the format is suited to

An almost square rug suits furniture grouped around a centre: two armchairs with a round side table, a small corner seating area or a play area. In a nearly square room, it fills the centre more evenly than a narrow rectangle. Under a dining table, on the other hand, more surface is needed; larger formats are the safer choice there.

More choice in neighbouring sizes

If you are somewhat flexible on size, you will find a far larger selection of around two metres in length under rugs in 150 x 200 cm. The rugs in 170 x 240 cm offer a little more surface, and the square rugs page shows true squares in many sizes.

Frequently asked questions about rugs in 180 x 200 cm

Why are there so few rugs in this size?

Most rugs are knotted in elongated proportions, roughly in a ratio of two to three. Almost square pieces are made less often, which is why the selection here is small.

Are the rugs new?

Most of them, yes. Individual Kilims are semi-antique, i.e. around 50 to 75 years old. If a rug is older, you will find its age in its description.

How do I care for a wool rug?

Vacuum regularly without a rotating brush and soak up spills immediately with an absorbent cloth. Every few years, a thorough wash by our rug cleaning service is worthwhile.
