Square and round in one size

The size 250 x 250 cm covers two shapes: square rugs with 250 cm sides and round rugs with a 250 cm diameter. Both carry the same size in the shop and therefore appear together on this page; round pieces are slightly more common. Hand-knotted rugs are never exact to the centimetre, so the selection includes side lengths and diameters of around 245 to 262 cm. All sizes of one shape are shown on the square rugs and round rugs pages.

At the dining table and in square rooms

These rugs make their strongest impression under the dining table. Allow around 60 to 70 cm of rug beyond the edge of the table on each side, and even chairs that are pushed back will stay on the rug. A round rug with a 250 cm diameter therefore suits a round table of roughly 110 to 130 cm, and a square one a square table of a similar size. In an almost square living room, the square gives a corner seating group a calm frame.

Tabriz, Bidjar and Nain

The selection is mainly oriental and comes almost entirely from Persia. The most common are Tabriz rugs, mostly in 50 Raj, alongside 40 and 60 Raj. Equally well represented are Bidjar rugs from Iranian Kurdistan, knotted so firmly that chair legs do them little harm, and Nain rugs, some in the 6La quality. Moud rugs from eastern Iran complete the range. Most pieces show a medallion that sits exactly in the centre of the round or square surface.

Wool, silk and warm reds

The pile is mostly made of Kurk wool, and of new wool in the remaining pieces. A considerable share contains silk, which traces tendrils and flowers and shimmers depending on the light. Dark red and rust dominate the colours, joined by dark blue, cream, beige and multicoloured rugs.

Modern pieces

Modern rugs are in the minority in this size. Among them you will find wool rugs and Gabbeh-style rugs, some of them hand-tufted. The modern rugs page shows more contemporary designs in all sizes.

Frequently asked questions about the 250 x 250 cm format

How is a round rug measured?

For round rugs, 250 x 250 cm refers to the diameter. On a hand-knotted piece it can vary by a few centimetres at different points; you will find the measured values with each rug.

Round or square – which fits better?

Take your cue from the shape of the table or the room. Under a round table, a round rug looks harmonious; in a square room and under a square table, the square does.

How large should the room be?

Allow 40 to 50 cm of free floor all around. For a rug of this size, the room then needs sides of around 3.30 to 3.50 m, so that the rug lies freely and does not touch the walls.
