A square rug in 300 x 300 cm covers nine square metres, a round one with a 300 cm diameter a good seven. Both shapes carry the same size in the shop and are therefore shown together on this page, with round rugs in the majority. Because no hand-knotted piece matches the nominal size exactly, the selection ranges from around 285 to 315 cm in side length or diameter.
Under a round dining table of around 160 to 180 cm in diameter, a rug of this size leaves enough surface on all sides so that chairs do not slip off the edge when someone gets up. The square suits large, almost square living rooms, entrance halls or rooms in period buildings, where a rectangle would upset the proportions. So that a strip of floor remains visible all around, the room should measure at least about four by four metres.
In this format the selection is almost purely oriental, and every rug is knotted by hand. Most pieces come from Persia, a few from India, China and Afghanistan. The most common are Bidjar rugs, which are densely and heavily knotted and lie calm and flat even over a large area, and Nain rugs, including 9La and 6La. Tabriz rugs in 50 and 60 Raj follow. Less common are Moud and silk rugs from China and Ghom.
Kurk wool and new wool are roughly balanced in the pile; some of the rugs contain silk or bamboo silk. Dark red is the predominant colour, followed by beige and rust. Most have a medallion in the centre; the other pieces are densely patterned. On a round rug, the medallion becomes the focal point around which tendrils and borders form rings; on the square, the four corners create a clear frame.
Modern rugs are the exception in 300 x 300 cm. You will find round and square pieces in other sizes under round oriental rugs and square oriental rugs. If the room is clearly longer than it is wide, a rectangle such as the rugs in 300 x 400 cm is a better fit.
Yes, round rugs are actually in the majority in this size. The figure then refers to the diameter.
After unrolling, a large rug often needs a few days to lie completely flat; slightly raised edges usually settle by themselves. A non-slip underlay keeps it in place on smooth floors.
Vacuum in the direction of the pile and turn the rug a little further from time to time; with a round rug, this changes nothing about its effect in the room. For a thorough wash, our rug cleaning service is there for you.
