The classic runner size

Eighty centimetres wide and two metres long: in this size, a runner fits into most hallways, along one side of a bed or in front of a kitchen unit. The page shows runners around 70 to 89 cm wide and 190 to 215 cm long; with hand-knotted pieces, the dimensions vary by a few centimetres. The selection is large and mainly oriental.

Yalameh, Bidjar and Hosseinabad

Among the oriental runners, three types lead the way. Yalameh rugs mostly show geometric patterns in strong colours. Runners from Bidjar are particularly densely knotted and withstand a lot of foot traffic; Hosseinabad runners come from the Hamadan region. They are joined by Moud, Tabriz in 50 Raj and Nain rugs, above all in 9La. Most come from Persia, other runners from India, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Gabbeh, Ziegler, Kilims and modern runners

Gabbeh runners have a thick, high pile and feel soft under bare feet. Ziegler runners from Afghanistan and Pakistan bring calm floral patterns into the hallway. Kilims from Fars and modern Kilims complete the selection; many of them are reversible. Modern runners make up a smaller part, some of them hand-tufted. A few machine-woven acrylic runners are washable and also suitable for outdoor use.

For hallway, kitchen and bedroom

In the hallway, a strip of floor should remain free on both sides; at 80 cm wide, the runner fits well in hallways from about one metre wide. In the kitchen, it lies in front of the cooker and sink; more on this under kitchen runners. In the bedroom, it accompanies one side of the bed; the bedroom runners page shows suitable pieces. Red and beige are the most common colours, followed by dark red and dark blue; the most common motif is the medallion.

Frequently asked questions about runners in 80 x 200 cm

Is two metres long enough for my hallway?

Measure the hallway and subtract around 20 to 40 cm at each end, so that doors open freely and the runner does not end at the wall. For longer hallways, you will find other lengths under oriental runners.

One runner by the bed or two?

With a double bed, two runners in a similar colour look calmest, one on each side. At 200 cm long, they accompany the bed almost along its entire length.

How do I stop the runner from slipping?

Place a non-slip underlay of a suitable size underneath. It holds the runner firmly on tiles and parquet and ensures that the edges do not curl up.
