Taupe Rugs

Taupe combines the warmth of brown with the calm of grey. Most of our taupe rugs are hand-knotted Oriental rugs such as Moud and Kazak, plus modern kilims with stripes.

Taupe rugs in the room

Taupe is a shade that does not have to decide: depending on the light, it looks sometimes greyer, sometimes browner. That is exactly what makes it so versatile. A taupe rug suits cool shades of grey as well as warm wooden furniture and brings different materials together into a calm, elegant whole.

In the living room

In the living room, taupe forms a refined, understated base. Sofas in white, grey or velvet green show to particularly good advantage against it. Large sizes such as 250 x 350 cm or 250 x 300 cm bring even large seating groups together. Our living room rugs show a larger selection for this room.

In the bedroom

In the bedroom, taupe creates a calm, hotel-like atmosphere. With bed linen in white or grey and bedside tables in dark wood, the result is a harmonious, grown-up look. Small sizes such as 80 x 120 cm fit in front of the bed, larger ones underneath it. You will find more designs among the bedroom rugs.

Which taupe rugs does Morgenland offer?

Most of our taupe rugs are hand-knotted and almost all are made of virgin wool. A little more than half are Persian rugs, a quarter come from Afghanistan and the rest from India. A good three quarters show classic patterns, and just under a quarter have a modern design. The classic designs are Oriental rugs, above all Moud and Kazak, and the modern ones are mainly flat-woven kilims with stripes.

Moud rugs

Almost half of our taupe rugs are Moud rugs from eastern Persia. They are finely knotted, often with delicate silk outlines, and frequently play with natural wool and earth tones. Typical features are medallions or all-over patterns of small motifs, which give the rug a calm, refined effect.

Kazak and modern kilims

Kazak rugs with geometric patterns modelled on Caucasian originals look bolder. Modern, flat-woven kilims, on the other hand, show taupe in stripes or graphic fields and suit pared-back, modern interiors well.

Sizes and shapes

Almost all taupe rugs are rectangular, and runners and round designs are only occasional. Common sizes are 200 x 300 cm, 170 x 240 cm and 100 x 150 cm, plus the large sizes for spacious rooms and small mats in 80 x 120 cm. Large rugs in particular look especially calm in taupe, because the shade never becomes heavy even across a large area.

Which colours go with taupe?

  • White and lime white for a clear, elegant room.
  • Dusky pink and powder pink for a soft, modern combination.
  • Dark blue and petrol as cool, refined accents.
  • Brass and bronze for warm highlights.
  • Smoked oak and walnut for a homely effect.

Frequently asked questions about taupe rugs

Is taupe more grey or more brown?

Taupe lies exactly in between. The French word means mole and describes its grey-brown fur. If you are looking for cooler tones, you will find them under Grey Rugs.

Doesn’t taupe look too dark?

Taupe is darker than beige but lighter than brown. In light rooms it looks elegant and cosy; in dark rooms, the pattern should contain light areas so that the rug does not appear too heavy.

Does taupe go with grey furniture?

Very well, because taupe itself contains a share of grey. With light grey sofas it creates a calm tone-on-tone effect, and with dark grey ones an elegant, muted contrast. Cushions in dusky pink or petrol add a little colour.

Which shades of brown go with taupe?

Light, warm shades of brown harmonise best. You will find a selection among the light brown rugs.

You will find further brown and earth tones under Brown Rugs.
