Usak rugs are among the most important Turkish knotting traditions and have stood for outstanding craftsmanship from Anatolia for centuries. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have stocked a carefully selected collection of these distinctive rugs since 1977, pieces that convince with their characteristic patterns and exceptional quality. Our Uschak rugs combine traditional knotting art with timeless aesthetics and are excellent for demanding living spaces.
The town of Uşak lies in western Anatolia, about 200 kilometres east of İzmir, and looks back on a rug-knotting tradition spanning more than 600 years. As early as the 15th century, rugs were produced here that travelled along the Silk Road to Europe and were prized in the palaces of European noble houses. The town's strategic location on important trade routes contributed significantly to the development of rug production.
Historical records show that Usak rugs were already depicted in important European paintings in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Usak weavers developed their own design traditions over the centuries that differ markedly from other Anatolian centres. Today Usak is one of the most important rug production centres in Turkey, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods.
Usak rugs are distinguished by their characteristic geometric and floral patterns, often kept in warm earth tones. Typical are large medallions in the centre of the rug, surrounded by symmetrically arranged ornaments. The colour palette ranges from strong reds through warm browns and beiges to elegant blues. Especially prized are the so-called "Star Uschak" patterns with their characteristic octagonal stars.
A further feature of the Usak tradition is the classic borders that frame the main rug, usually consisting of several narrow bands with different motifs. These borders often show stylised flowers, geometric meanders or traditional Turkish ornaments. The Usak visual language is less complex than that of Hereke rugs, but no less expressive and harmoniously composed.
Authentic Usak rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool sourced from sheep of the Anatolian highlands. This wool is distinguished by its firmness and natural sheen. The base fabric is mostly cotton, which provides stability and durability. Knot density typically lies between 90,000 and 250,000 knots per square metre, with finer examples reaching significantly higher values.
The knotting technique follows the Turkish Ghiordes knot, also known as the Turkish knot. This knot type ensures a particularly robust structure and gives the rug its characteristic texture. As with Kayseri rugs, the colours are traditionally obtained from natural materials, although modern Usak rugs often use chrome-dyed colours that offer better lightfastness.
Usak rugs are excellent for living and dining rooms, where they can function as representative focal points. Their warm tones harmonise especially well with classic and Mediterranean interior styles, but they also set interesting accents in modern rooms. These robust wool rugs are designed for daily use and develop a beautiful patina through use.
Care of Usak rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional turning are usually enough to preserve their beauty. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning, which protects the fibres and refreshes the colours. With appropriate care these rugs can last for decades and continually gain in character.
In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt we present a carefully curated selection of Usak rugs in various sizes and designs. Our collection includes both classic vintage pieces and modern interpretations of traditional patterns. Each rug is personally selected by our experts and checked for quality and authenticity.
