Origin and history of Wiss rugs

Wiss rugs come from the eponymous village in the Iranian province of Isfahan. The village of Wiss, sometimes also spelled Viss, lies in a region known for its long tradition of rug knotting. The knotters of this area have refined their techniques across generations and developed characteristic patterns that make Wiss rugs unmistakable.

Rug production in Wiss follows the proven methods of Persian village knotting, where each family cultivates its own pattern traditions. This diversity is reflected in the various designs, which range from geometric to floral motifs. The knotters use patterns often passed down from generation to generation.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Wiss rugs are distinguished by their strong colours and striking pattern structures. Typical features include geometric designs with medallions as the central element, surrounded by stylised floral and leaf motifs. The borders mostly show multiple frames with different patterns harmoniously coordinated with one another.

The colour palette includes mainly warm tones such as red, blue and beige, complemented by accents in white or black. These colour combinations arise from the use of natural dyes, lending the rugs their characteristic radiance. The balanced distribution of colours throughout the overall design is particularly appreciated.

Material and knotting technique

For Wiss rugs only high-quality virgin wool is used, sourced from local sheep. This wool is distinguished by its hard-wearing nature and natural sheen. The warp usually consists of cotton, lending the rug stability and preventing deformation.

Knotting is carried out with the Persian knot (Senneh knot), with knot density typically between 120,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre. This medium-to-good knot density enables both detailed pattern depictions and a robust construction that makes the rug suitable for daily use.

Interior styling and care

Wiss rugs are excellently suited to living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, where they can be used as central floor coverings or as decorative accents. Their warm colour tones harmonise particularly well with classic and modern interior styles. Like Borchalou rugs or Garawan rugs, they bring oriental flair to any room.

Care is carried out by regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment these robust rugs can retain their beauty for decades. It is important to avoid direct sunlight and excessive moisture in order to protect the colours.
