Anthracite Rugs

Anthracite is a very dark grey with a calm, almost black depth. Our anthracite rugs are mainly modern kilims from India, plus hand-knotted Oriental rugs.

Anthracite rugs in the room

Anthracite looks modern, clear and confident. The colour is darker than grey but softer than black, and it therefore forms a strong, calm foundation for light furniture. In rooms with concrete, steel and glass, an anthracite rug underlines the purist character; with wood and linen, it looks warm and homely.

In the dining room and kitchen

Anthracite is one of the most practical rug colours for heavily used rooms. Under the dining table, the dark surface hides stains and crumbs, and with light tables and chairs it creates a clear contrast. You will find rugs for the dining area in many sizes under Dining Room Rugs.

In the living room

In the living room, an anthracite rug anchors a light seating group and gives the room structure. With white sofas it looks graphic and modern, with cognac and wood cosy. Sizes such as 170 x 240 cm or 200 x 300 cm suit most seating groups. In large rooms, a rug of 250 x 350 cm defines the living area while still keeping it calm.

Which anthracite rugs does Morgenland offer?

A good three fifths of our anthracite rugs are modern rugs, and the rest show classic patterns. Around four in five come from India, and individual pieces from Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. Hand-woven and hand-knotted designs are roughly evenly balanced. More than half of all designs are plain. The rugs with classic patterns are hand-knotted Oriental rugs.

Modern kilims

Just under half of the rugs are modern kilims. They are flat-woven, light and robust and show anthracite as a calm, finely textured surface. We show completely calm surfaces without a pattern under Plain Rugs.

Classic patterns

The classic rugs include designs in the style of Tabriz rugs with medallions and tendrils on an anthracite ground, plus individual Ziegler rugs. Light patterns stand out particularly clearly on the dark ground. Some rugs contain silk, which adds fine highlights.

Sizes and shapes

Just under three quarters of the anthracite rugs are rectangular, almost one in five is a runner, and there are a few square and the odd round design. Common sizes are 150 x 200 cm, 170 x 240 cm, 200 x 300 cm and 70 x 140 cm, and for large rooms 250 x 350 cm.

Which colours go with anthracite?

  • White and chalk white for a clear, graphic look.
  • Yellow and ochre as a lively accent of colour.
  • Cognac and caramel, which make the room warmer.
  • Sage and eucalyptus for a natural effect.
  • Light oak and rattan as warm materials.

Frequently asked questions about anthracite rugs

What is a kilim?

A kilim is a flat-woven rug without a knotted surface. The patterns are created during weaving by the coloured weft threads. Kilims are thinner and lighter than knotted rugs, lie flat and work well under chairs and doors.

Does anthracite make a small room feel smaller?

A large, dark rug can indeed make a small room look more compact. With light walls, light furniture and a size that is not too large, the room stays open and the rug becomes a clear focal point.

Are there also lighter shades of grey?

Yes. You will find slightly lighter tones among the dark grey rugs, and graphic contrasts among the black and white rugs.

We show an overview of all shades of grey under Grey Rugs.
