Dark Grey Rugs

Dark grey looks powerful and calm at the same time. Our dark grey rugs are mainly modern designs in Berber style or as kilims from Afghanistan, plus classic Oriental rugs.

Dark grey rugs in the room

Dark grey is a colour with poise. It forms a strong contrast with light walls and furniture without looking as harsh as black. A dark grey rug shows off light sofas, hides everyday marks well and gives modern rooms a clear structure. It looks particularly beautiful with wood, which balances the coolness of the grey.

In the dining room

Under the dining table, dark grey is a practical choice, because small stains and crumbs are hardly noticeable. With tables in oak, walnut or white lacquer, it creates a calm, elegant contrast. Sizes such as 200 x 300 cm or 250 x 350 cm offer space for a large table group. You will find more designs for the dining area under Dining Room Rugs.

In the living room

In the living room, a dark grey rug anchors light seating groups and gives the room depth. Cushions in mustard yellow, rust or petrol add colour, while throws in wool or knit make it cosy. Our living room rugs show more combinations for the living area.

Which dark grey rugs does Morgenland offer?

A good three fifths of our dark grey rugs are modern rugs, just under a quarter show classic Oriental patterns, and the rest are woven rugs with Oriental patterns. Just under half come from Afghanistan, and a quarter each from India and Persia. Three in five are hand-knotted, just under a quarter hand-woven.

Berber style and nomadic motifs

Almost a third of the designs are Berber-style rugs with graphic lines, diamonds and symbols on a dark ground. They are joined by rugs with nomadic motifs that draw on the tradition of nomad rugs. Many of them are knotted in Afghanistan; you will find more pieces of this origin under Afghan Rugs.

Kilims and viscose

Flat-woven kilims from Maimana bring geometric patterns and a robust construction. Modern rugs with viscose show dark grey with a silky shimmer that looks lighter or darker depending on the light. Plain, abstract and patterned designs are roughly equally common in this shade.

Sizes and shapes

Almost nine in ten dark grey rugs are rectangular, plus some runners and the odd round design. Common sizes are 200 x 300 cm, 170 x 240 cm and 150 x 200 cm, and for large rooms 250 x 350 cm and 250 x 300 cm.

Which colours go with dark grey?

  • White and cream for a clear, light contrast.
  • Mustard yellow and curry for a warm, modern accent.
  • Rust and terracotta, which bring warmth into the room.
  • Light blue and sage for a calm, fresh effect.
  • Light wood and leather as natural companions.

Frequently asked questions about dark grey rugs

Is a dark grey rug easy to care for?

Yes, dark grey is one of the least delicate rug colours. Stains, dust and crumbs are hardly noticeable, especially on patterned designs. Only light fluff and pet hair are more visible on a dark ground.

What is Berber style?

Berber style takes up the patterns of the rugs from the Atlas Mountains of North Africa: graphic lines, diamonds and symbols on a calm ground. This look suits modern and Scandinavian interiors particularly well.

Dark grey or anthracite?

Anthracite is even darker and almost black, while dark grey is a little lighter and more neutral. You will find a dedicated selection among the anthracite rugs; the light grey rugs show lighter tones.

You will find the entire selection of grey tones under Grey Rugs.
