Origin and history of Nahavand rugs

Nahavand is a historic city in the Iranian province of Hamadan, known for its long tradition of rug knotting. The region lies in western Iran and benefits from ideal climatic conditions for sheep farming, which is reflected in the excellent wool quality of the rugs. Rugs have been made here for centuries following traditional patterns and techniques.

The Nahavand knotters have perfected their craft over generations, preserving traditional designs that often combine geometric elements with floral motifs. These rugs were already much sought after by European collectors in the 19th century and today rank as prized antiques and collector's pieces.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Nahavand rugs are distinguished by their characteristic colour palette, dominated by warm red and blue tones. Earthy browns and beiges are also typical and lend the rugs a particular warmth. The patterns frequently show geometric medallions at the centre surrounded by stylised flower and leaf tendrils.

A special feature of Nahavand rugs is the use of the so-called Herati pattern, consisting of a diamond with four leaves. The characteristic palmette border is also a recurring element. The borders are usually multi-layered and show complex geometric or floral designs. Related styles can also be found in Ardakan rugs and Golpayegan rugs.

Material and knotting technique

Nahavand rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality sheep's wool sourced from the local region. The wool is carefully selected and dyed with natural colours, which provides the characteristic colour depth and durability. The warp is usually cotton, which gives the rug stability.

The knotting is done with the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), known for its robustness. The knot density typically lies between 120,000 and 300,000 knots per square metre, lending Nahavand rugs their characteristic firmness and longevity. Similar quality standards are also found in Ghoutshan rugs and Moud rugs.

Interior styling and care

Nahavand rugs are excellently suited to drawing rooms, dining rooms and reception areas, where their warm colours and traditional patterns create a cosy atmosphere. Their robust nature also makes them suitable for more frequented areas. The earthy tones combine well with various interior styles, from classic to modern.

Caring for Nahavand rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional professional cleaning are usually sufficient. Thanks to the high-quality materials and the firm knotting, these rugs develop a beautiful patina over the years and are often passed down through generations. If required, we offer professional rug cleaning.
