Origin and history of Najafabad rugs

Najafabad lies in the central Iranian province of Isfahan, about 40 kilometres west of the historic city of Isfahan. This region is regarded as one of the most important rug-knotting centres of Persia and looks back on a tradition of more than 400 years. The town of Najafabad developed as early as the 17th century into an important trading place for high-quality oriental rugs.

Rug knotting in Najafabad was decisively shaped by its proximity to Isfahan, which was regarded as the cultural and artistic centre of Persia. Many knotters moved between the two cities and so brought the refined designs and techniques to Najafabad. Today, both traditional and modern interpretations of classic Persian patterns are made in the region.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Najafabad rugs are distinguished by their elegant floral designs and the characteristic central medallion. Particularly common are the classic Shah Abbas palmette pattern and stylised blossoms and tendrils. The ornamentation is usually symmetrically composed and shows remarkable attention to detail.

The colour palette ranges from warm reds through deep blue to cream and beige base tones. Also characteristic are the discreet greens and gold tones, which give the rugs a particular depth. The borders frequently show geometric patterns or stylised flower motifs that correspond harmoniously with the main field.

Material and knotting technique

Najafabad rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool from local sheep. The wool is carefully selected and dyed with natural as well as high-grade synthetic colours. The warp is usually cotton, which gives the rugs stability and shape retention.

The knot density typically lies between 250,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, resulting in a fine and even surface. The Persian Senneh knot is used, known for its longevity and for enabling the finest detail work. This technique allows the complex patterns to be rendered precisely.

Interior styling and care

Najafabad rugs are excellently suited to living rooms, dining rooms and representative areas. Their elegant appearance and harmonious colours suit both classic and modern interior styles. Their robust properties also make them suitable for medium use.

For care, regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile is sufficient. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Direct sunlight should be avoided to protect the colours. With proper treatment, Najafabad rugs retain their beauty for decades and may even gain in value.
