Round Oriental Rugs

A round oriental rug breaks up the straight lines of a room and places the medallion at the centre. Here you will find only round oriental rugs, almost all of them hand-knotted.

The round oriental rug

Sofa, cabinet and table almost always give a room straight edges. A round rug counters them with a soft shape and creates a clear centre. With oriental rugs, there is something more: the medallion that defines many classic patterns sits exactly in the centre of the round shape. This selection includes only round rugs in the oriental style; we show modern designs under Round Rugs.

Bidjar, Nain and Tabriz in round form

Three groups shape the range: Bidjar rugs with their dense, strong knotting, Nain rugs, also in the qualities 6La, 9La and 12La, and Tabriz rugs, mostly in 50 Raj, some in 60 Raj. They are joined by round Ziegler rugs from Afghanistan with generous floral and tendril patterns.

Kurk wool, silk and fine knotting

Almost all the round oriental rugs in our range are hand-knotted. Most have a pile of Kurk wool, the fine wool from the shoulder and neck of the sheep; the rest are made of new wool. Some of the rugs, such as Nain and Tabriz, have silk knotted into them, which highlights ornaments and outlines. The knot density usually lies between around 200,000 and 640,000 knots per square metre. Most pieces come from Persia, some from Afghanistan, and a few from India and China.

Diameters from 100 to over 300 cm

The most common diameters are 150, 200, 250 and 300 cm. Small round rugs of around 100 cm fit in front of an armchair, in a niche or beside the bed; a few large pieces from 400 cm upwards fill the centre of a spacious living room.

Where a round rug works well

Under a round dining table, the rug echoes the shape of the tabletop and brings table and chairs together. In a seating area, in a bay window or under a round coffee table, it creates a calm focal point. For rooms with walls of equal length and for tables with corners, there are also square oriental rugs.

Frequently asked questions about round oriental rugs

What diameter fits under a round dining table?

As a rule of thumb, the rug should extend about 60 cm beyond the edge of the table all the way round, so that the chairs still stand on it when pushed back. A table with a diameter of 120 cm therefore suits a rug of about 250 cm.

Why do round rugs have a size such as 150 x 150 cm?

The two values give the diameter in two directions. Because every knot is tied by hand, they can differ from each other by a few centimetres.

How do I care for a round oriental rug?

For everyday care, regular vacuuming without a rotating brush is enough. Turn the rug by a quarter now and then, so that the pile wears evenly even in the areas that are walked on most. For a thorough wash, you can use our rug cleaning service.
