Terracotta Rugs

Terracotta recalls fired clay and Mediterranean houses. Our terracotta rugs combine classic Oriental rugs from Persia with modern Nepal and Gabbeh rugs.

Terracotta rugs in the room

Terracotta is a warm, earthy colour with a lot of orange. It brings sunshine into the room and looks more natural than a pure orange. With light walls, wood and plants it creates a relaxed, southern mood, and with grey and black a modern contrast.

In the hallway

Almost one in five terracotta rugs is a runner, including long designs of three to four metres. In the hallway, the warm colour looks inviting and makes cool tiled or stone floors feel more homely. A long runner also guides the eye through the space and makes narrow corridors look tidier. You will find more runners under Hallway Rugs.

In the living room

In the living room, terracotta goes with furniture in rattan, linen and light wood. Large sizes such as 250 x 350 cm or 200 x 300 cm take in the whole seating group and give the room a warm base tone. Green plants and ceramics in natural tones complete the Mediterranean impression. You will find more interior examples among our living room rugs.

Which terracotta rugs does Morgenland offer?

Almost all our terracotta rugs are hand-knotted. A good two thirds come from Persia, the rest from Nepal and India. About three in five rugs show classic Oriental patterns, and two in five have a modern design.

Persian rugs with medallions

The Persian rugs include Bidjar rugs, Hamadan, Sarouk and Gholtogh, often with a medallion surrounded by terracotta-coloured areas. Gholtogh rugs come from the area around Bidjar and are similarly densely knotted.

Nepal and Gabbeh

Nepal rugs are more modern, working with calm surfaces, fine borders or minimalist patterns, and they suit Scandinavian or Japanese-inspired interiors well. Persian Gabbeh rugs often show terracotta as an almost plain field with lively colour variations, created by differently dyed batches of wool.

Sizes and shapes

A good four in five terracotta rugs are rectangular, and the rest are runners. Alongside large sizes there are many smaller ones such as 100 x 150 cm and 80 x 120 cm, which suit entrance areas or work as bedside rugs. In open-plan layouts, two rugs in the same shade can connect different areas, such as the dining area and seating corner.

Which colours go with terracotta?

  • White and lime plaster for a Mediterranean look.
  • Olive green and sage, which recall gardens and herbs.
  • Sand and beige for a soft tone-on-tone effect.
  • Petrol and indigo as a cool contrast.
  • Black for graphic accents in lamps and frames.

Frequently asked questions about terracotta rugs

Is terracotta more orange or more red?

Terracotta lies in between, with a slight leaning towards orange. If you prefer darker and redder tones, you will find suitable designs among the rust rugs; the salmon pink rugs show softer shades.

What is a Gabbeh rug?

Gabbeh rugs originally come from nomads in southern Persia. They have a higher, dense wool pile, few and often naive motifs and plenty of calm surface. Thanks to the differently dyed batches of wool, the terracotta looks lively and never completely even, which defines the handcrafted character of these rugs.

Does terracotta go with a tiled floor?

Very well, especially with grey or light tiles. The rug takes the chill off the floor and brings colour into the kitchen, hallway or dining area. A patterned design blends more easily into a room with many joints and lines.
