Rust is a warm shade between red, orange and brown. Our rust rugs are mainly hand-knotted Oriental rugs from Persia, many of them Bidjar, plus modern Gabbeh rugs and kilims.

Rust tones look earthy and cosy. They recall autumn leaves, fired clay and old metal and bring a natural warmth into any room. Unlike a pure red, rust does not impose itself but combines with wood, linen and leather to form a calm, homely whole. The colour looks especially beautiful in rooms with plenty of daylight, where it seems to shift between red and copper depending on the time of day.
In the living room, a rust rug harmonises with sofas in cognac, sand or dark green. For large rooms there are sizes such as 250 x 350 cm and 300 x 400 cm, which can also structure open-plan living areas. You will find more designs under Living Room Rugs.
At the dining table, rust creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, especially with tables in oak or walnut. Patterned designs are practical here, because small marks disappear into the pattern. We show suitable sizes under Dining Room Rugs.
Around nine in ten rust rugs are hand-knotted, and the rest are hand-woven. Just under four fifths are Persian rugs, alongside pieces from Afghanistan and India. Besides virgin wool, kork wool is used strikingly often here, giving the surface a soft feel and a matt sheen. The great majority are Oriental rugs; just under one in ten is a modern rug, usually a Gabbeh from India or a flat-woven kilim, often plain or with a minimalist pattern.
Almost a third of all designs are Bidjar rugs. During knotting, the rows are beaten down particularly firmly, which makes them heavy and very stable in shape. Rust often appears here as the ground colour of large medallions or in strong borders.
Ziegler rugs with generous tendrils in muted rust tones look calmer. Tabriz rugs with 40 or 50 Raj stand for finer, urban patterns. Overall, around two in five rugs feature a medallion, and a quarter are heavily patterned.
Just under four in five rust rugs are rectangular, and a good one in ten is a runner. There are a few round and square rugs. The most common sizes are 200 x 300 cm and 170 x 240 cm, followed by the large sizes for open-plan rooms. Smaller rugs from 100 x 150 cm work as a warm splash of colour in front of the fireplace, by an armchair or next to the bed.
Rust is darker, with more red and brown, while terracotta is lighter and more orange, like fired clay. You will find lighter, earthy variants among the terracotta rugs.
Very well. Grey cools the warm colour down a little, and rust brings life to a grey interior. A rug with grey or blue elements in the pattern links the two colours even further.
Kork wool is the fine, soft wool from the neck and shoulders of the sheep. It is particularly supple and takes dye well, which is why it is often used for high-quality Persian rugs. Rugs made of kork wool feel softer and have a subtle, natural sheen.
We show further warm tones under Orange Rugs, and deeper shades of red among the dark red rugs.
